(More customer reviews)I bought this for about $40 thinking I'd gotten a good deal on a weed eater (hadn't looked around too hard)... used this twice then the spool housing wore out quickly.Doesn't look like the replacement spool has the part that wore out which is extremely unfortunate because its construction seems to be a hideous oversight, as least in my opinion.

Here's why:The spindle mechanism which causes the spool to spin and thus cut weeds is a small metal die with very shallow metal grooves.The spool housing connects to this and has a small die opening with shallow plastic grooves.When brand new these fit together snugly and create a tight fit for the spool to spin.What happens though in application is if there is any moderately dense vegetation and the spool does not get completely free, it will slow down but the die will still spin inside the plastic housing whereby causing the spool container to strip out on the inside.Soon, the spool housing just fell off and will not reconnect to the die.. it just falls off as soon as you start it up.I was hoping I could buy a replacement for this but it seems as though the replacement spool just contains the wire/ wire holder.The part that stripped out was the part that connects to this which is not, ridiculously, part of the replacement part.Two uses and my weed whacker is now whacked.

A classic example of a disposable society which we desperately need to get away from.

(More customer reviews)The dual feed lines are the worst. They do not feed properly and there is a minimal amount of line on each channel of the spool. Also the .08 line breaks easily and the notches on the spool are too narrow to hold the line in place. I've converted to a .65 and it works more satisfactorily; however, the design flaw is evidenced by the fact that most other manufacturers have abandoned this modus operandi. The trimmer handles well and starts properly, but the line issue is insurmountable and therefore makes the product a poor choice.Also the cost of a pre-threaded spool replacement is ridiculously expensive. In summary, save your money and look elsewhere.

(More customer reviews)I have traditionally found that B&D lawn tools are pretty good and this weed wacker works just fine.It trims well, the "rotating head action" helps with edging, and it is reasonably powerful.I only gave it three stars (I would actually give it two and a half if I could) because 1) It does use a lot of string.I would also suggest wearing long pants when using this thing because the string advances automatically during use and the piece that is cut off goes flying.I got a couple of "wacks" on my legs from this.My daughter got hit once too so keep your kids out of range.I also found that it works better if you buy the replacement spools rather that buying string and winding it up yourself.I consider myself somewhat handy but the line advancement never worked right when I purchased the string seperately (much cheaper) and wrapped it through/around the spool myself.The replacement spools get pricey after a while.Also, 2) I think this thing is a bit noisy.Especially when the string advances.It whacks against the string cutter in quite a loud fashion (in my opinion).However it does work and will do the job.I have no need or desire to replace it at this point. However when the time to replace it does come and if improvements are not made I will look hard at other models.

(More customer reviews)I somewhat agree with the guy from Vegas that this is a waste of money, EXCEPT that this is about the only way to get extra spools for your Black & Decker weed whacker.Note that you can buy a spool of 600 feet of .065 line from Amazon (Desert Extrusion brand, price is $8.80 for 600 feet in March 2007).Then, with the bulk line, plus these 3 spools, plus the spool that came with the weed whacker you can have up to 4 spools ready to rock and roll at minimal cost.Unlike the guy from Vegas, it takes me more than 2 minutes to hand-wind a spool, but not a lot longer, it's pretty easy to do, my main advice being I find it better to not try and wind more than 25 feet onto a spool even though it presumably can hold 30 feet of line.Everytime I wind more than 25 feet I get a lot of jams until the line gets those extra few feet chewed off.Hope this helps.
